You can catch a lot of fish doing such with just a couple shot on mono leader and it's fun.
Bead heads are preferred. Remember, your pattern has to be a bit bigger / sized up than dead drifted nymphs because they are not hang'in in the strike zone as long.
Look at some hex nymph patterns. Frankly, I think Nicks original summer duck Woody Bugger in sz. 8 makes a dandy hex nymph.
Look at Sparrows also, and kind of spin off to what you think is best for here.
Last, a bead head hares ear or pheasant tail, copper john, soft hackle is pretty darn consistent.
Patterns tied in the round work just fine for such and are a little more fun to tie.
I can see you being deadly doing such and personally find such a lot of fun. Most often you still get the big rip / jaw dropping take as with swinging but, can work pocket water better than sink tip swinging too.
I would like to see you develop a real good Steelhead/Brown swing nymph / bug. Always thought there was room for more of such type patterns for here locally / specifically. We used to play around with such but, never really quite dialed it in.
There are a lot worst places to start than working with pheasant, pheasant rumph and maybe some colored wire or floss ribs for some triggers. Good luck, I look forward to seeing the development.
