Stumpy and Alex - sweet ties! Alex, great idea with the olive/white wing, I like the red & flashy purp. butt All the shanks are great! Not sure how big your shank flys are, but you may want a smaller hook (is that a #2??). Unless you have really stiff stuff for your hook loop, you will get too much hang down and possibly missed hits when the fish grabs the end of the tail and not the hook hanging below... Fishtec uses wire for the loop - it keeps the hook inline. He should put some of his flys up on this board to show us (hint hint ) 2 cents, Steve

Thanks Steve. The shank flies are tied with 20lb mono. I was using 25 or 30lb mono, but I actually thought that it was too stiff. I think this round with the 20lb will be good. The hooks are size 2... good eye. I have size four as well that I may use instead. I made sure to leave enough of a loop to swap out hooks. I also found that the 25 or 30lb would be pretty difficult to squeeze through a size 4. For a bit I was also using a 30lb braided line, but that is way too soft and the hooks would definitely be dragging well below the body of the fly.
Stumpy, I've been putting off sharing my flies for a few weeks now, and you're post seemed like an opportune moment. Are you really heading out to Oregon to fish with Scott Howell? If so... it is you who walks away from this message board the victor. That purple tube fly is pretty rad. I think a few steelhead will find it quite scrumptious... until the get to the gooey hook center.

Alex you know I am only teasing ya lol. Ya I am headed out to Medford OR Sept. 18th fishing with Scott for two days and then doing my own program on the third day. Then hopping a plane over to Boulder CO to see some friends. I was out on the Umpqua for a half of a day with a guide on a trip around the states last year but I want Scott, he was booked, and a 1/2 day was not enough at all. It still was one of the fondest memories I have though, steelhead on a dry but that was in mid-August. I think the plan this time around is to be on N or S Umpqua or really even more likely the Rogue which I would really like to do to try a new one. The guide I had last time was awesome too just a bit removed from the daily trips. He improved my casting by at least 30% in just 4 hours. I have been working with a firm called WSP in Amherst and I thought I would celebrate my first gig. I am really looking forward to it. The orange fatty was my best attempt at this:

"the 25 or 30lb would be pretty difficult to squeeze through a size 4." You might be right - 20 lb. mono should be stiff enough I use a lighter piece of leader, like 1X to loop through the heavy stuff and pull/thread it through the hook eye - even on the water when you have to change out a bent tip hook.

Been thinking more and more about them every day. Spent the weekend tying patterns for the upcoming season. Decided to put one of the flies from this weekend in my car so it will be ready come steelhead season. Lets all hope we get some rain and that the weather cools down a bit some time soon.

Nice ties,
I started tying my Gurglers on HMH plastic tubes, using the hybrid with liner configuration and am very pleased after fishing. I cut the foam for the back a bit thinner/less width, via the buoyant plastic and also do not (no need) double the lip back..
They seem to pop, gurgle and bubble a little better than hook shank ties.
The only advantage (for me) is that tubes pack light and small in baggies, hooks replaced and durability.
If interested Nick at OOFS could show the plastic tube configure via hybrid and liner as it's the same we do for wet flies. I did substitute SLF dub for estaz on the thicker plastic body compared to shank and also do prefer the "bat wing" style gurgler of one pencil diameter spun deer belly hair at thorax , cliped flat top and clipped slightly less tight on the belly. This leaves the nice bat waker wings , tips out the sides. Like Nick I use Arctic Fox tail for tailing.
Tie a couple on tubes, when you have time.
