Tube Flies, A Tying, Fishing & Historical Guide By Mark Mandell & Les Johnson Frank Amato Publications Inc. - 1995 This is probably the first book I have ever seen written exclusively about tube flies. It was originally published back in 1995 and is still probably the best book available for beginning tube fly tiers. It has sections on the history of tube flies, tools, materials and hooks, many step-by-step instructions, a decent listing of patterns and information on fishing them. Tube flies have come a long way since this book was written but the authors enlisted help from some of the best tube fly tiers of the time in putting this book together. The book is put together in a logical easy to read order and makes use of many well done photographs to get it’s points across.

Tube Flies Two, Evolution By Mark Mandell & Bob Kenly Frank Amato Publications Inc. - 2007 This follow up to “Tube Flies, A Tying, Fishing & Historical Guide” is vastly different than that first book, not only in its content but in the way it was put together. Instead of focusing on things like tools, materials and instructions, this book looks at the individual tiers, their fly patterns and their theories on tying and fishing the flies. Each chapter is written by a different tier and from that tiers perspective. I would not recommend this book to a beginning tube fly tier, but as a pattern guide and a resource for more advanced tiers it is a very valuable book. The fly photography alone is worth the price of the book.

Hairwing & Tube Flies for Salmon & Steelhead. A Comprehensive Guide for Anglers & Flytyers. By Chris Mann. Stackpole Books – 2004 This book is more of a pattern guide than anything else. If you are looking for tying instructions for tube flies this is not the book for you. The first part of the book discusses the history and development of hairwing flies and tube flies in Europe and North America. The second part of the book is a pattern listing and is very extensive. If you are looking for a book that is strictly a listing of fly patterns this book could be a valuable resource for you. Admittedly, most of the tube fly patterns are Atlantic salmon patterns developed in Europe. This book is unique in the fact that it uses drawings of the flies instead of photographs to illustrate what the flies look like.

Tube & Waddington Fly Dressings By Kenichiro Sawada Tulchan Books - 1996 This book, published in Japan, is a good book for someone who is an experienced tier but is just getting into tube flies. I would not recommend this book for a beginning tier. Another draw back of this book is that it is written exclusively for the Atlantic salmon fisherman. It has sections on tools, materials, hooks and how to rig tube flies. It also has an extensive list of patterns with a comprehensive list of materials and a step-by-step for each pattern listed. The book is put together in a logical easy to read order and makes use of many well done photographs. It also has a section on Waddington shanks and how to tie flies on them. This is something I have seen very little of in any other books. An interesting fact about this book is that the text is presented in Japanese as well as English.

The Tube Fly By Kenichiro Sawada Sawada Inc. - 2006 This book, like Sawada’s other book, is published in Japan, is a good book for someone who is an experienced tier but is just getting into tube flies and I would not recommend this book for a beginning tier. However, it has no information on Waddington’s. It also is written almost exclusively for the Atlantic salmon fisherman although some of the patterns would probably work well for other fish. It is layed out similarly to Sawada’s first book with sections on tools, materials, hooks and how to rig tube flies. And an extensive list of patterns with a comprehensive list of materials and a step-by-step for each pattern listed. The book is put together in a logical easy to read order and makes use of many well done photographs. In it Sawada sticks to his usual habit of presenting the text in Japanese as well as English.
