Lately there have been a few (3-4) of my fishing buddies looking to get into Spey fishing this fall for use in GL tribs. Besides the normal recommendation of take a casting class...the discussion usually turns to what would be a perfect all-around Spey rod for the Gl's.
I usually suggest a 13' 8/9 wt rod. This rod might seem a bit over-gunned for Steelhead in some Erie systems, but about right for Steelhead and Salmon in Lake Ont. and Huron tribs,
If you could pick one all-around rod for the Gl's that could handle Salmon, Steelhead and Browns for medium to large tribs what would it be?
Thanks.

the GL's in general is kind of a tough one since there is a pretty diverse number of creeks someone in a particular area may be fishing. here we have a creek like 18 mile to the Niagara so it's always a tough decision for one rod. that being said i think you are pretty much right on with a 1308 or there abouts. i am also finding how versatile a rod like the T&T1107 is. with the proper lines this rod could fish both rivers in my scenario with no problem. where a 1308 is a lot of rod for the smaller waters. personally i would like to see companies make more short heavy weight rods like Scott's new 1108 A3 at reasonable prices. a great example are the dechos, they made longish light weight rods (i.e. 11' 9" 5wt) which we really don't have much use for here. but a short powerfull rod could cover a lot of range, hopefully they are listening.
i know i'm not helping much but this really is a hard decision similar to getting one SH rod for bluegills to tarpon!

I couldn't agree more Nick. I'd like to see Echo make that exact rod an 1108. I believe TFO if now making them but I really like the Echo rod lines, plus that way I'd be able to give OOFS the buisness. Anyone suggest that to Tim and the guys at Echo? Anyone know what they have planned for 2009?

i have not seen any new info from Echo yet but all will be anounced by the dealer show in Denver on the 13th.
for now the new Scott A31108 is scheduled for delivery on the 15th of sept. they will retail at $335 so it may be the answer to many peoples questions. we will have a shop demo asap.

That is great to hear that Scott is coming out with some rods (A3) in a similar price range as the A2's. I hope the trend towards quality products at lower price continues. IMO - That has been the only downside to getting into to spey fishing. The cost of the gear can get expensive in a hurry....at least for those who become obsessed...

I'm hearing rumors that Echo is going to have some switch rods this fall. Any truth to that? If som any news on what platform and price point they'll be based upon? Andy...

Totally pumped. Last year there was nothing like these rods (switch type) in this price point now there's plenty. Can't wait to test drive them. Do you guys have the Scott A3 demo yet?
