Very good advice Nick, and nice additions Rob. And it is tough as hell to get up that early for the tricos.
Something I didn't see mentioned, but probably everyone knows anyway, is to wear drab clothes so that you don't stand out too much. Blend in a little.
A dull colored fly line probably wouldn't hurt either. I remember reading that one of the old timers from England thought us Americans were "daft" or something to that effect, with our bright yellow and orange lines that stand out like a neon sign.
It is also great advice, as Nick said, to not rush into the water. Look around and observe--maybe for more than a few minutes too. 5-10 minutes, if you can stand it with some fish rising.
Lastly, here's a quote from Ernest Schwiebert's book matching the hatch: "Before one can become proficient at anything, he must want to put forth the effort required. One can never learn all there is to know about trout, but each bit of knowledge absorbed can be applied later with deadly effect. When you start to analyze your fishing as you would the slice in your golf game, you are on the right track. Armchair fishing can be almost as much fun as the real thing, and it can increase your efficiency."
Only one way to get better--fish as often as you can!

A few things to add:
I tie a double trico spinner on a size 18 hook and that is a bit easier to see than a single on a size 24. If you look at the surface of the stream during the spinner fall you'll see clumps of spent males and that's what's being represented.
Also to help with hookup on small hooks, pinch down the barb and carefully bend the point off center a little bit. Helps with the small gap of tiny hooks.

I find a "wet" spinner tied with black wire and CDC can bring in fish as well, not all the tricos float. Sorry Nick fished from fast water to slow, A size 20 or 22 scud hook as it seems size is less of an issue underwater Mike..
