your going to need a bigger hook. If you are using a small hook, use less deerdair so you dont clog up the hook gap. You may want to trim it a bit closer. Good shape on it tho, and nice collar

Looks good man. This is my 2nd ever spun deerhair fly. Let me tell ya something... It gets easier the more you go. When you start trimming them you can do a lot of things. And if this is considered high jacking your post just tell me and ill take it down. I just wanted to show you a comparison to someone else who is just started. Its not like the pros, i cant seem to get it as compact. But you tell me. As you'll see the green isnt very compact at all. It takes forever to get it down. Are you doing two wraps around the hair then pulling? Thats what i was taught to do. And yours looks way better then my first one! Post more pictures when you start attacking it with the scissors. By the way mine is some type of diver(i think), well you know. Good luck bud.

looks like you need to pack the hair a lot tighter and when your trimming i dont know what you use but the best is a razor blade that is sorta flexible.

pat, good job for your first try, I would start by matching the wing/collar to the hook size, when tying on the wing/collar material hold it on top when tightening the thread, that will keep it from spinning around the hook, packing the hair a little tighter will help, finally trim the spun hair closer to the hook shank to tighten up the head. serrated scissors or razor blades will give you a cleaner cut. re: razor blades, I use single edge injector blades, they are not flexible at all but I feel a lot more comfortable handling them than the dbl edge safety razor type, the single edge ones for box cutters aren't very sharp good luck
