wax ~ i don't use a specific rod wax. mine is not tacky. i believe it is paraffin but really can't remember. i purchased it for waxing ferrules 20 years ago. i believe from a grocery store, canning food area and it came in a box with a half dozen small, rectangular (maybe 3"x6"x1/2" thick). i keep this chunk of wax in my fanny pack or vest un-covered, just lays in there. as you can see it has had some use over the decades. it is not soft nor tacky. based on my pop'ed epoxy experience and the fact wax has never let me down. i will never tape again unless using mid to long belly spey lines and 14' + rods ~ which won't happen. if one used substantially up grained skagit heads, big chucks of t14 and had a wicked hard snap t cast, they may want to tape also imo or back off the gas and learn to smooth it out into a circle spey. my understanding is substantially up grained skagit heads and snap t cast's have snap more than one rod whether taped or not so, it may not matter. i can see why with the basic physics involved. it's not so much a loosening ferrule as over grained aerial, opposite direction, mass condensed grains in short head ~ snap rod rather than snap t cast. the same could happen two hand over head casting such. phone photo

I've never taped. I would say half of my friends do. Most of that group had a really long rod blow up back in the day at some point. Since I don’t tape and it sucks waiting for the tapers, I just usually b-line it to the first run and hop in first! ;D ;D , oddly enough I have one rod that does comes apart when I’m chucking chickens at pike, and usually it is because the sink tip connection pulls the top section off the end if I strip in too much line…. Perhaps I will start taping that single hander???

I have an older 14' 10 wt. fenwick which I have to tape. I use electrical tape on the outside. do not use tape of any kind inside of ferrule. Don't like waxes because of sticking and dirt. put the rod together and spirel wrap 2" over the ferrule.

I broke a Sage spey rod while practicing for the first time with it. I didn't tape although I was told to do so. At the time I didn't have a clue on how to load a two-hander so my idiocy about ignoring advice and my maiden voyage could have been the cause of the break. After that I always taped the joints, but as time went on I noticed fellow anglers not doing it. These guys were, and still are much better casters than I am. After getting a little better at it I decided to ditch the tape and use the wax. Being cognizant of any loosening sections during a day of fishing pays dividends. I was tired of having to retape every time I got in the vehicle to switch locations. In essence, I am doing what Nick does especially since my longest rod that I actively use is thirteen feet.
