What have you been tying lately? I bit into the large, articulated shank, bug , lately~ (warning phone photos ) Fun until a 24" hammer handle Northern Pike shreds them ………. Did about a dozen 2/0 flat wing deceivers, a few scandi style tubes and some parachute dry's Other than that the Olympics have been enjoyable and as I crossed the lower Catt via rt 5 the other day I seen two deer crossing on the ice….. I hope Dunkirk Dave seen his shadow ……. …….been a long cold winter as is. How about you……….whats been in your vice lately ?

Nice ties, you have there. Here's what I've been tying. Some are single hooks, some double, tandem hook up, tandem hook down, a little bit of everything. I have a shelf life of about two or three flies. All the articulated ones are using Fish Skull articulated shanks. Casting wet zonkers & deer hair, I have a feeling, is going to be like casting a wet sock. Good thing toothies like wet socks!

Great toothy flies guys. I hate to say I haven't been tying much because of school but I'm considering starting the hendricksons. Too soon? Haha. I want to build a box just for 3wt attractor flies for the adk area I have yet to exploit.

John, what is that tail material? Is that a rabbit strip? It looks huge or maybe my scale is all messed up.

Riley...in the 1st pic (with the row of flies), the four on the left have tails of a mix of synthetic yak hair, DNA Holo-Fusion (russet), & DNA Holo in a sparkly white. It's the 1st time I worked with the yak hair & I really like it for making long tails. It comes in lengths of about 24". I used about 18" folded in half. Like I said, it's the 1st time I've tied with it & it looks like good material. It's light, has good color & sparkle, should repel H2O, but I don't know how durable it will be. There's only one way to find that out! The Holo-Fusion is heavier & not as wispy as the yak but I wanted a long tail made of synthetics. The three flies on the right have tails that are double bunny zonkers.
BTW..are you the same Riley V that put together a compilation of pike fly vids on the tube? The 1st pike fly I ever tied was Matt Thomas' Red & White Pike Fly.

I really should be tying musky flies but I want to wait until I have some more materials on hand so they are everything I want them to be. Confidence is 90% of the game. You guys got me thinking pike so I tied these up today.

Nice flies, Riley. I've got a couple more I tied that I'll poat tomorrow. BTW, what is that red (& purple, too) feather-like material in the 1st pic? Is it marabou? Thanks..JJ

It's ostrich. Not super tooth proof but I still really like it.

Riley...thanks. No wonder I guessed wrong. I've never tied with ostrich & marabou was the closest I knew. Here's a pic of the red & white pike fly that is on the Riley Vacinek youtube site. Are you sure it's not you? (ha!). It's tied with marabou. Good stuff but messy. Perch & walleye are my Achille's heel, especially walleye by slow trolling a three-way. I found a few spots last summer that were in close & shallow so I tied some clousers in my go-to colors to mimic my rigs: Have you found a good synthetic substitute for bucktail?
