Anthopotamus Furled-body Spent Spinner
Hook: Daiichi 1110 #16
Thread: Cahill 8/0 Uni
Tail: Pale Yellow Microfibbetts split in the furling (not easy to do!)
Abdoment: Yellow or Amber Antron furled to create extended body
Thorax: PMD Superfine dubbing
Wings: Yellow Darlon and Pearl DNA fibers sandwiched and tied spent
This is an extraordinarily durable fly with great application when it is getting too dark to change flies anymore.
Tying notes: Incorporating the microfibbetts into the furled body is difficult to do, but makes the tying of spent spinners with furled bodies possible. Some folks simply glue them on, but my method yields a much more durable fly.
Step 1 Tie in the Antron near the bend in the hook.
Step 2 Tie in the Microfibbetts on top of the Antron, extending rearward with a combined length of the extended body plus the tail you want.
Step 3 Twist the Antron and Microfibbetts until the tension to furl is achieved.
Step 4 Create a "stop" using a hackle pliers at the point where you want to double the body back.
Step 5 Release the portion of the furl beyond the hackle pliers and allow to unravel. The fibbetts should pop out (sort of).
Step 6 Grab the Antron fibers only and twist them in the same direction as the original twisting, and do it roughly the same number of times as you did the original portion.
Step 7 Double back the newly twsited Antron to the body using the hackle pliers "stop" as the midway point. The fibbetts should be poking out toward the rear when you do this.
Step 8 Tie in the doubled back Antron firmly and release to allow the body to furl.
