I always assume everyone knows how to tie these flies but based on the number of questions i get i decided to do a SBS. This technique can be used to make either sucker spawn flies using Angora yarn or this fly sometimes known as "crystal meth" the material is the only difference. This fly uses sparkle braid instead of the angora yarn. BTW "crystal meth" has to be the worst name ever for a fly. i switched the name to the Sparkle Egg since it's tied with sparkle braid. The Sucker Spawn was originally tied as an inland trout fly in Central PA. A lot of the streams there have big numbers of suckers and when they gather and spawn in the spring, the trout would move in to feast on their eggs. Later it was adopted as a Steelhead fly and just general egg pattern.
Start with Daiichi 1120 #10-14. this is a 12. Start the thread just behind the eye and work it back to the bend.
Select a color of Sparkle Yarn you like.
Take two and a half turns of braid off the card for one fly.
Stretch it a bit and then fold it in half. Lay it on the hook flat with each strand parallel to the hook and along each side.
Form the loop about the same size as the hook gap. this makes your 10 not look like your 14. Set the loop on top of the hook and take a few turns of thread over the doubled braid. When you're sure the length is correct lash it down good with another six wraps.
Keep the thread tight, lift up the remaining yarn and anchor wrap the thread on the hook moving about a third of the way forward. Keep each side of the braid along each side of the hook.
Bend the braid into a loop on top of the hook, again keeping it about the hook gap length.
Lash that down with a good six wraps and keep it tight.
Again lift the remaining braid and anchor wrap it on the hook moving forward to the two thirds point.
Repeat for the third loop.
Lift the remaining braid and anchor wrap behind the eye to secure it.
Now lift the braid and start your whip finish under the remaining braid, right behind the eye.
Close up of the whip finish position.
Clip off the remaining braid about the length of the loops out over the eye.
Finished Sparkle Egg from the side.
From the top. Note that each side is a separate row of loops parallel to the hook shank.
