My philosophy about fly tying is simply to tie flies for fishing in specific circumstances to match a hatch or take advantage of some unique event that stimulates trout to feed. Most of my flies are basic patterns that are adapted in size and color to imitate specific bugs. Therefore, most of my flies are more variations on a theme rather than a unique tie for a specific bug. I take no credit for original design on any of these flies. Almost all of my thinking about fly tying is influenced by other patterns seen in fly shops, books or in another anglers fly box. Where one ends and the other begins is not something I ever have worried about and have little interest in tracking to either give or receive credit. Suffice it to say that I am confident that none of my patterns are entirely my own brainchild, but I am extremely grateful to all those that have contributed to helping me refine and define my own tying skills and these patterns. In my patterns I use a lot of CDC feathers. Generally I buy my CDC from European sources or strictly stick with genetic CDC as an alternative. Most of the CDC I see available on fly shop shelves these days will not work for some of these patterns that capitalize on the length or fullness of the European stock. Perhaps in some cases several feathers stacked together might work, so experiment if you see something you like.
