Hook- Daiichi 1130 #24 Abdomen and thread- Black 14/0 Rib- Gray thread 8/0 (twisted tightly) Thorax- Black Superfine dubbing Wing- White, Light Dun or Cream CDC Oiler Puff Tying notes: Proportion is crucial when tying these small flies, so measure carefully when tying things in. The wing is tied in after the abdomen is completed, then the dubbing is placed for the thorax. The wing is pulled over the thorax and tied in just behind the hook eye. If you fish the spring creeks and encounter the hatches of small midges this fly is a “must have” in your arsenal. The thorax color can be changed for cream midges, but I have found this basic pattern to be effective whenever the small midges are hatching. Granted, it is very tough to see, but the fish have little difficulty. Because of this problem I almost always will target a specific fish with the fly and gauge my reaction from where I think the fly is rather than a visual connection.
