i'm thinking about getting into spey fishing but am not too sure what the whole process is. is the reel that you would use on a regular one handed 8 wt. be the same on a spey rod? anyway does anyone know about a low cost, quality spey outfit?

I'm sure out host could help you out and get you pointed in the right direction. I was just in the shop last week and had a waggle with some very nice, very reasonably priced rods. These things are a far cry from the $500+ rods we bought years ago (much nicer). You can get great tapers these days for a real bargain.
That all said the first part of the process is deciding what you're going to be fishing for. Next, get some help. There is great advice in the shop and definitely get someone to help you with your casting right away. It's a whole new ball game, so learn from those who have gone before, there are plenty of folks willing to help. Getting help from the start adds to the return on your investment (catching fish) AND the cost.
About the reel, you have to decide what your fishing for, how you're going to do it (heads, long bellies, etc) and go from there. Don't fear the cost of a new reel to go along with your new long rod, just make sure the whole thing is balanced for you and it'll pay for itself.
