A fun fly to fish throughout the year on any steelhead river. I enjoy fishing it thru shallawer tailouts and runs on bright days. It is dressed a bit sparse and the wings don't extend past the tag.
Step 8 is a bit tough, but works great with short stemmed feathers like Pheasant rump.
Hook: Alec Jackson 2051 size 1
Thread: 6/0 or 8/0
Tag: Flat tinsel - small - silver
Tail: GP Crest dyed red
Rear Body: orange floss
Front body: Seal, STS, or Angora - black
Ribbing: Oval tinsel - medium - silver
Hackle: Pheasant Rump - purple
Throat: Teal or Gadwell
Wing: Goose shoulder - black
Head: Purple
Step 1 - Attach the thread to the hook shank near the rear of the hook and tie on a piece of small flat tinsel (silver) on the near side of the hook shank.
Step 2 - Wrap the tinsel towards the bend of the hook, but don't go further than the barb. Reverse direction and wrap tinsel to tie in point and tie off on far side.
Step 3 - Take one GP Crest dyed red and attach to the hook shank where the tag stops.
Step 4 - Attach medium oval tinsel to the farside of the hookshank where the tail is tied in. Wrap the thread forward over all tag ends and try to keep the body as smooth as possible. Stop at midpoint and trim off excess.
Step 5 - Tie the orange floss to the nearside of the hookshank, right at the midpoint.
Step 6 - Wrap the floss to the base of the tail and reverse directions. Stop at tie in point and tie off on far side of hook shank. Trim excess.
Step 7 - Make a dubbing loop, insert dubbing and spin. Wrap the dubbing forward a few turns then stop.
Step 8 - Tie in the Pheasant rump feather by the tip on the underside of the hook shank. The first wrap of hackle should start at the fourth turn of ribbing.
Step 9 - Rib the body with 5 equally spaced ribs. The fourth rib should be right in front of the rump hackle tie in point. Tie off at the eye and leave some excess.
Step 10 - Wrap the Pheasant rump feather forward, folding the hackle as you go. Each turn should be on the rear edge of the oval tinsel. Tie off and trim excess tinsel and stem.
Step 11 - Select a Teal or Gadwell feather and strip one side. Tie in by the tip and make 2-3 turns. Tie off and trim excess.
Step 12 - Select either right and left goose shoulder feathers or a centered goose shoulder feather. Snip off a strip from each side. They should be about 3/16"-1/4" wide. The strip from the right side of the feather is for the far wing and the opposite for the left side. Tie them in either Dee style or strip wing style.
Step 13 - Finish with a purple head and add a few coats of finish. (varnish not shown)
