I purchased the new Echo a few weekends ago and I finally settled on an Airflo Compact Scandi shooting head and running line setup for it. Haven't caught any fish on it yet but have been out practicing a few times. I can't tell you how much fun this two-handed game is. It almost doesn't even matter about catching fish. Trying to make sweet loops has totally taken over my brain. Even after just a few sessions with a few different polyleaders I'm seeing how versatile it is going to be. I can't wait to get into some fish and see how the setup handles the tug.

Only a couple wiggle tests and Lawn Casts so far with the SR 7wt. Rivers here are still waaay to high even for practice casting. I wasn't sure how I'd like the grip, but I think it's pretty cool. I hope to get out with it in the next couple of weeks. So far really impressed with this stick especially for the $$
Thanks again Nick.

Totally love mine. What line are you using on it Chris? I haven't ordered a line for it yet... I will order probably order a scandi comp line. I know a few guys who swear by their Elixir line (Beulah). I hope to try the Elixir 380 in the next couple of weeks. It seems like it might be a good grain wt for this rod. Hopefully more people will chime in with line combos as the rods start getting fished. For now To play around I have a cut-back Rio AFS line. The first fishing test will be in a few weeks. I plan on taking it to Florida and doing some surf casting with 9wt Saltwater line.

I'm liking the Scandi Compact in a 480 grain more and more each time I use it. How much of the AFS did you cut and what grain weight and length is it now?

got the 7 wt loaded with the 420 scandi compact line and it feels great. with a inter. poly leader and weighted fly it just flies and turns over well. i put on some heavier poly's and it get tough to turn over at the heaviest ones in 10'. if i got the d-loop and anchor perfect it went right over but if not it was collapsing at the end. my guess is that the heaviest 10' poly with an unweighted fly is about the limit for that line in average hands. once i took of the 1" copper tube fly and tied on a spey it handled the ESFS 10' fine but that extra fly weigh was tough.

Yeah even the SR 8wt with the 480 scandi head had a tuff time with ESFS 10' and a 1" copper tube. Will have to try it with a cone-head or unweighted fly. The long front taper allows for a bit more delicate presentation but lacks the mass to punch out the really heavy stuff. I think it will be effective in most the situation we see locally. I think for T-14 and heavy tubes you'll need the Skagit head. I tried some overhead casting with it yesterday and I really launches. Would like to see how an Outbound works with it as well.

I spent some quality time with my SW 7wt on Saturday and the 420 compact scandi head rocks on this thing. However, as indicated it is clearly not designed to be a winter dredging rod/set-up but a great spring/late summer set-up.
I ran 4 ft of t-14 + 4ft of T-6 + 4 ft of 12lb tippet. and beadhead flies
As to the rod itself, it handled everything I managed to hook including some monster suckers that were bigger than the steelhead.
A very fun rod to fish when paired with the Airflo Compact Scandi.
