EARLY STONEFLIES Plecotera Capnia, Taeniopteryx and related species make up our early black & brown stoneflies. They begin to hatch around the first of March as #18’s & get bigger as the season warms. By the end of March they are around a #10. This is a very important hatch for the steelhead fisherman as they are the first non egg food source available. They hatch by crawling out of the stream & can be easily seen on the snow. Fish key in on the nymphs as they make their way to the shore from deep water.
