Hey I am new to spey casting and really want to get into it. I have been fly fishing since I was 10 yrs old and consider myself an advanced caster with a lot left to learn. I typically use a 6wt. for nymphing and buggers and am confused about two handed rod weights. I have heard that two handed or "spey" rods are beasts compared to single handed rods??? I am mainly looking for extra distance but don't want a rod that is going to be over kill while fighting fish. I am looking at a the Temple Fork Deer Creek 5/6wt. 12' 6" rod or the Temple Fork switch deer creek 7wt. 11' rod. Since they both cast the same grain weight. Would the longer rod be to much to handle or perhaps the short rod not enough to properly learn to spey cast? Any thoughts would be appreciated as to which would be a better rod for a beginning spey caster. Thanks guys!!!

the shorter "switch" rods may have a better range for our waters. there are more creeks around here where a 11' rod is good and a 13' may be too long. since they are rated to the same grains neither is a "beast" but will play fish similar to a 7 wt single hander. basically the same weights we would normally use for steelhead, 7's and 8's. that being said it is usually easier to learn on a longer rod.
we have demo equipment we loan out so you can try it and find out for yourself. we do not carry TFO but in that price point we carry Echo and do have a 13' 7wt and a 10'10" 7wt switch. you're welcome to test them out anytime with a little warning since they have been getting borrowed a lot this year. or if you stop in the shop on saturday we can do some instruction with them as well. Echo does have 2 12'6" 6wt and a 10'10" 6 wt switch too and we do carry all of them in the shop.
