This tube fly is a variation of one of Ken Sawada's tube flies known as the "Cotinga."
I tried this fly (silver, blue, purple and red version) last November and managed to a hook a nice steelhead on about the 8th cast of the day. It was actually kind of interesting.
It was around 8:30am and I was downstream around the bend from the Trestle Pool, beginning to fish from the North side of the river. There was about 6 guys on the other side of the river and they were drifting egg sacs on the bottom.
They hooked a couple steelhead while I rigged up but couldn't get them in because they couldn't follow them and they were using 6lb test. One of the guys was a big mouth and I could hear everything he was saying..... although it was more like smoke blowing you know where.
About 15 min. past and a drift boat was starting to come through the run and the loud mouth on the other side told the driftboat guys to effing anchor in front of that effing guy over there.....that's where all the effing fish are.
I laughed out loud and the guys in driftboat said "what's up with that a-hole?" I told them I walked in and landed one on the swing as soon as I stepped in the water. They said "sweet!!....get another" and kept on floating downriver and I did the steelhead waltz down to the 90 degree bend about a 1/2 mile down.
