I usually grab the materials and just wing it with what I have in front of me. Tonight it lead to this...... By DB_OutfittersIt gets a bit sloppy toward the head and I was wondering how to keep it from having such a large "bump" where I am securing the wing to the tube?? I still wrestle with the amount of material to use. I think making it a bit more sparse would help, but still much more fun than the ESL. Please don't be shy guys, I have thick skin. Thanks.

nice work, I'm sure it will fish. heads can get big really quickly on tubes, sometimes there's not much you can do. yes, a sparser wing would reduce the head, you can also trim the butts at an angle before you tie the wing in or - after a few wraps to hold the wing in place, starting at the top and working your way down & forward -, lift a small clump of the butts take a wrap in front of them, then a another and another then trim the butts right at the thread and cover what's left with your thread spun flat, it will give you a cleaner slope and it really locks the hair in place. hope this helps.

Thanks for the thought and I'll have to give it a try.

Your other option is tie on half that amount (about even with where your hackle is) then the hackle, and put a second bunch of hair(smaller pile)just in front. Smaller head - same wing volume. and it will bring your collar more forward.

Why thanks, Ralph... I tie alot more feather wings than hair wing these days. But always remember going back to the vice to rebuild a fly I thought was cool, After pulling off the wing when I was removing some weeds there was too much hair for the thread to get a good hold on the big mound of the butts. You can also put a boatload of head cement on, so it wicks down into the hair, but it will also wick up the hair, making it stiff: not the best technique. I don't know if there are any on the site, (or any more in my boxes) but I have seen matuka style flys with 4 or 5 hair wings sections strung up the back. Charlie? you got any?
