Whats a list of flies that you think are an absolute must have for winter steelhead? I plan on going out tomorrow and getting stuff to tie flies. I was just wondering what flies i should plan on tying?

Egg patterns: suckerspawn, blood dots, crystal meth. Nymphs: princes, pheasant tails, hare's ears, stoneflies Streamers: zonkers, wooly buggers, mickey finns Those are some basics to start with. One tip: don't go overkill on the number of patterns you tie. I have consolidated the number of patterns and flies I carry so much from first starting. I like to carry around 10 or fewer patterns that work in many different situations, when I used to have so many boxes it was pointless. Remember, the drift catches fish not the fly.

id have to agree with whatsajob on this one. Certain colors/patterns can help in different light situations and various water clarities but different patterns arent the most important thing. The most important thing is presentation. You can catch fish on anything as long as you present it right. Just practice your drifts and putting things in the right place in the water column. Get your fly where the fish are and make sure it doesnt look fake.
oh and as far as patterns go just get some chenille and rubber legs/weight for some big ugly stoneflies .. you could do wooly buggers or zonkers in a few colors.. then you got your egg patterns you could do a flashy one and then a more subdued one.
