I whipped up a few dries for the summer. It will be my first dry fly fishing ever, so I the patterns I chose were some go-tos around here. I also haven't ever tied on a size 20 or smaller, so I wanted to practice up. How do they look to you guys? Goddard Caddis based off of Charlie's pattern (sz 14) Griffith's Gnat (sz 20) BWO (sz 20) BWO (sz 24)

This is from my limited knowledge/experience in tying dries. For your first dries, I think they are looking pretty good. I bet the will catch fish! A few tips though... for the smaller flies, I'd try and find some smaller hackle feathers. Your griffiths gnat has some pretty huge hackle, but you did a pretty nice job wrapping it. On your goddard caddis, the hackle looks like it is sized OK, but somehow it got stroked back a little. It looks like more of a collar than a dry fly hackle. You want it to be standing vertical or perpendicular to the hook shank. You did a nice job on the deer hair... that can be a tough thing to get right!

Thanks man! I knew I would hear it about the hackle. I was just working with what I've got for now. I will definitely be purchasing some smaller stuff as soon as I get a chance to go to the fly shop. I do get your point about the hackle on the Goddard too. I will be improving them as I go. Thanks for the tips! That's why I post all of my flies on the critique board. Oh, and I love spinning hair!
