golden pheasant tail and wood duck with the B&P version in the tutorial
B&P Sectional Spey
i've been doing these types of flies for a few years now and the more i use them the more i like them. finding long spey hackle that was inexpensive and legal has always been tough. this method allows you to create some traditional looking flies in about any size you want up to about 3/0. or tubes to 1.5 inches using burned pheasant or turkey tail fibers. the one in the tutorial is tied with bronze mallard wings but they can also be tied spider style, in the round without wings. i like to tie the tube versions that way for fishing but the ones with wings just look that much cooler, if harder to tie. color combos are endless and i also like to use duck flank collars on them too. especially the tube versions tied in the round.
the tail feathers are burned in bleach to destroy the little velcro like fibers that make them hold together. this makes the fibers thinner and very free flowing in the water. you can use dyed PT and it will hold it's color after bleaching. i really like golden pheasant tail, lady amherst and the smaller turkey tails but damn near any feather with long fibers can be used such as ostrich or peacock herl too.
other versions
1" tube, slf dubbing with lady amherst tail hackle and gadwall collar with peacock wings.
green butt skunk version with the same hackle and goose shoulder wings
natural pheasant tail tube version
golden pheasant and olive mallard version
purple PT and mallard tube
