HI all,
Being a big fan of spider type wet flies and wets in general (not streamers or hairwings realy), I was wondering how effective they are on Fall run? I managed my first Steelhead on a homemade wet on the swing this spring (it's the one in my profile pic) and a few others until it was shredded & hope to have the same kinda success with them this fall. Any advice on hook size/style, and maybe perhaps a favorite pattern or two & how best to fish them to set me in the right direction would be great. Thanks for any help in advance. -Nick

Yes they are effective...might I suggest googlong Alec jackson's Spade Fly Under VERN-O's flies look at the soft hackles ....most of these have taken steelhead (used on a beefier hook) Also Nick Pionessa's Woody Bugger or under VERN-O's Nick's Pick Nymph (under the Nymph portion of my flies)
The biggest thing is to add a 2x strong or there are some smaller steelhead hooks now a days Daiichi 2571....any of my patterns can be tied with or with ou added weight....hope this helps

there was just another thread on spey pages about simple flies and it got me to find the photo of this one. it has been very productive for me in clear water and is about as simple as they come. North Woods Spider hook aj #7 thread olive 6/0 body red fox squirrel body fur spun in a loop hackle wood duck flank folded i now tie them on 1/2" heavy tubes so i can fish them with just a mono leader and no weight. or user a heavier hook or even wrap some lead under the body. just enough weight to ensure you don't need a sinking leader or tip to avoid spooking fish with the dark tip.

I've had good success with wet flies also, most were a dubbed light blue body ribbed with fine silver wire, 2 turns of BEP and a 1 turn collar of natural teal, I'll get a pic up when I can, I like to tie these on blind eye hooks for practice

Thanks guys for all the info & idea's, Nick, that's a great looking fly, I have always loved the way the flank feathers look wrapped around on top & I have half a box filled with Ver-o imitations. Today's sorta my lazy day so maybe I'll play with my markers & pencils and sketch up a new creation & then post finished product later tonight.
