Yesterday i was fishing a smaller trib of the Catt. I parked at one of the bridges on the creek. Downstream from the bridge for less than an eighth of mile, I had plenty of success including a fish in just about every spot. Then i headed upstream and did not even smell a fish. While fishing a deeper run, i looked over on the high bank to see two large otter type animals dipped into the water. This strech has always been tough for me but, i think i may have the answer. Am I dreaming or has anyone else heard of something similar?

i have heard of otters being stocked by the DEC to try and re-establish them. i have not see one my self but they are supposed to be in the area. otters are about 3 feet long and look pretty damn big in person. there are also lots of mink which are about half the size and do eat fish as well. i have seen them personally catch fish while i was fishing spring creek. how big was the critter you saw?

Well they were about two feet long. I didnt even think about it being a minks, but now that you mention it they did have a maroonish coat. It was pretty interesting because i had never seen that type of creature before.

I had what I believe to be an otter float past me a few years ago on a southern Erie Cnty stream. It was black and slender, 2 to 3 feet long. It was just lazily floating down stream. I have seen plenty of muskrat, beaver and mink – this was not one of those. There a few fur trappers (strictly from commercial ) that I have run into while fishing the upper Catt watershed, but never asked them about otters. If you see a fur trapper ask them about otters & see what they say.

Last spring I saw a large muskrat in a lower Catt trib. It had a long slender tail. If I wouldn't have seen it's tail, I would have thought it was a beaver. It looked to me that Hosmer creek was damed up last year, in some spots, even though I saw no critters. Don't some creeks have problems with the beavers??

I have seen only one river Otter and it was on Conneaut creek in Ohio. They are supposed to be very shy, and elusive!
