welcome to the site Brent. the SM vids are very well done but may not be the best for beginners. lots of great info but not really starting at the very beginning if you know what i mean. i would watch it at some point for sure. i think the best all around vid for beginners is the Rio Modern Spey casting vid. since it's three discs it starts at the very beginning with all the basics, even down to holding the rod and stance. it then goes on to cover the different casts and styles out there all the way up to skagit styles even overhead casting and then trick casting. very comprehensive. www.rioproducts.com/product.php?recKey=120

Thanks for the welcome, Nick, We chatted in the shop in december for a little while (about switch rods) and you guided me towards this site. It's been great for looking at patterns and there is really good, civil (mostly!) discussion! Thanks for that.
thanks for the info on RIO's DVD's. I'll take a look at those. Maybe I'll get both! Do you have the RIO DVD in your shop???
regards
Brent

Brent:
I have the 1st Skagit Master DVD. Its pretty good but is narrowly focused on just one style of Spey casting. That is the "Skagit style" which uses a sustained anchor (as opposed to touch & go) with short heavy heads.
As Nick said above if you are not sure of which style of 2 handed casting is best for you and the type of waters you fish, you might be better off getting the RIO dvd's first.

thanks for that. The line coming (scandit) should allow me to make different styles of casts. Another tick for RIO's DVD.
