So im thinking of doing a little bit of pike fishing in the summer and i decided to tie up a perch pattern. Not really used to tying patterns for pike and i feel this one may be a little small (5 in in total length). Let me know what you think!!!! Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Sweet perch Dave. 5 in should be fine, any bigger and it will suck to cast. What does it look like wet and streamlined? that's where you should critique it yourself: Does it need more yellow? - less olive? darker bands?
Give it a swim in the fish tank or the sink (good luck finding open water outside ;D) and let us know how it looks. Your basic shape looks great!

It looks like the olive is kinkier and bulks up more than the yellow. You could double the amount of yellow and reduce the olive by 1/2. Or what about: yellow/ blend of olive and yellow/small amount of straight olive on top or do you have brown? a lot of variations, I don't think there is a wrong way. Remember, out of the water and wet always has a different (thinner) profile than in the water being stripped in.

That's pretty damn nice, I'd think that the walleye's and bass would munch down on that as well. Good tie!

cool ... htnaks for the input and advice. The olive is a different material (icelandic sheep hair and the yellow/white is raccoon finn) so thats y it looks different. But thanks for the pics and the info i really appreciate it

That will work.
One tip - make some of them a flashtail. Use up to 25 strands of flash a bou
and leave it a good 1/2" past the finished fly. Gold flash tails are killer on that color combo as are pearl flash a bou w) silver krystal flash combo on white bass /big shiner patterns of gray over white / olive over white and better yet chartreuse over white. For black patterns try purple flash tails.
Also weight forward eyes help with the action but, if those are lead they won't be much fun to cast in that size nor needed imo. Lighten up the front weight a bit either w) non toxic same size or smaller lead.........at least on some.

D-19...nice combination on the colors. At last weeks demo, Mark L stressed "translucency" & sparseness in his ties. Insects & fish use that for protection & camo. For a different look, try reducing some of the bulk & adding some thing like DNA Holo Fusion or white Slinky SF blend. Those have a shimmering pearly color blended with flash. When I studied the pics of the perch, they had that shimmer in between the vertical bars that helps them blend into the background. Good luck with the pike this summer!..jj
