Not really a report so I put this here. HAD to get out on Saturday morning. So I went over to the river. Made 10 cast and decided this was STUPID 20-30 mph winds and 6 inches of visibility from runoff. BUT, it was cool to see the birds going nuts There were shiners floating around and this guy I think I need a little more gray in the back and am thinking of ways to build that almost black tail, maybe

yep that is a rainbow smelt i believe as opposed to an emerald shiner. there is also a bigger smelt later in the year that has a chartreuse tint. i think you pretty much have the dark tail with that tie. i always have the white end before the darker back on my baitfish patterns. another thing to note is how little grey there is on the side profile. probably 7/8ths white. i just tied some scandi types to be more baitfishy and i added mallard flank for that look. we will see soon enough if it works any better.

Yes, deff. a smelt, there were a few shiners around as well but couldn't grab any. I have seen flys with a hackle feather stripped down to the tip with a little tail "V" piece left on. The reason I mentioned it is, this guy was half alive, swimming/floating around my legs and beyond the obvious silver/white in the sides, the tail was really noticeable in the water. It may be overkill - one more step that will probably get ripped off, but I may try some & see how they swim.

one method that works for me is to tie a dark hen hackle on a piece mono just as you would a hook shank. You can tie a knot in the mono to keep the hackle from sliding off just clip it afterwords (leave a short tail) After you tie it to the hook at what ever length you need, clip the sides giving you the "V" tail and a little extra movement to boot

Isch, "tie a dark hen hackle on a piece mono" Well that's a better idea than mine... I was going to take a whole feather and strip all the fibers off down to the end and cut the v. Your method is a little more conservative on the material end, Here's my tail-less tube version @ 4 in. long Hard to see in this shot, but there's some dark blue/purple flash just below the gray back Thanks, Steve
