I already asked Nick a few days ago, but I thought I would throw it out there. I'm heading to the islands (we haven't decided which one yet) on the 3rd week of August. Is there the chance to get into some fish while I'm there?? I haven't fly fished salt water yet, but what do people think about my options?? I can't see myself going on a boat with a surf rod, baited with shrimp, floating around. But I would like to see if anyone has any thoughts on fly fishing while I'm there. Any viewpoints, good or bad, will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Hey, I believe last year, fly fisherman magazine had an article on wild trout fishing on one of the islands. Im not sure which issue or anything, but im sure if you check on flyfisherman.com, you'll find it. As to the salt, im not sure, but they target dolphin (the fish that is) along the coast, probably within casting distance. But bring a rod anyways, you just might discover the next flyfishing destination!!

After a few tries on the net, bonefish seem to be where it's @. I did find that you don't need a license to fish in salt water. From what I have heard, I might have trouble getting into some fish, but hey, it's worth a shot. I'm glad I watched Nick's tying demo and Vince's video last spring. I may have to put in an order for the crab & shrimp patterns.

Definitely bring your fly rod, you never know what you may see cruising the beaches. Bring some heavy clouser type patterns and some crabs will not hurt either. Also, some streamers like deceivers. I have never fished Hawaii, but I think you can run into some bones (they have a few) as well as jacks along the beaches. I have heard there are some flats on some of the islands, but they are generally not known for bonefishing as they are volcanic and surrounded by mostly deep water with few flats. I would do a search on the net and I'm sure you will pull up some good info. I know there have been other discussions on fly fishing Hawaii. Good luck!
