I live in Burlington Ontario and have made WNY my second most visited Trout destination this year (8 trips under my belt so far). I am already tying flies for our upcoming Steelhead season North of the border and I am wondering when the Large L. Ont. Browns typically begin to migrate up the WNY rivers and creeks? I am trying to schedule a WNY weekend get-away to target migratory Browns and having two kids under 5, I need to provide plenty of advance notice...... I'm not looking for secret holes etc....just an idea of time of year so that I can book a hotel. Thanks, Chris

trying to nail down a date is going to be tough. the browns come in with the salmon most of the time but you don't want to be here then unless you like fishing shoulder to shoulder with about 300 buddies. the browns stay in the stream sometimes all winter, so a trip later in the year would be better crowd wise. i would personally shoot for late november or early december. still good numbers of fish including more steelhead, less people fishing, no weeds in the creeks and hopefully some inclement weather to thin the herd even further. they also dump water out of the erie canal in mid Nov so it brings up the flows and brings in more fish. usualy the weather is bearable all the way to Christmas most years, but you can never tell about freak storms. i prefer the later season by far, but you do take a bit of a chance with the weather. my two best days for LO browns ever both came in January when the weather allowed.
