That is a sweet vise! I have always wanted a real regal, I have a couple knock-offs. They look so classy and work great.
Just watch how you place the hook in the jaws when you are tying on the tiny hooks, I've read multiple stories of the hook popping out and the jaws chipping if the hook is set too close to the edge of the jaws. A few years back, it happened to one of my knock-offs, but i just figured it was because of the lower grade steel jaws. Come to find out it was my own damn fault. I looked for that hook for a long time after and never found it.
Workin' out of town?

yeah, regal's pretty awesome. the owner owns the factory where they are made (he grew up working in it, bought it later, and converted it to fly stuff). there is a special groove for the hooks in all the jaws now, i think.
yeah, i'm always getting shipped off to different places for work. in rochester this week, ohio in two weeks for two weeks, then syracuse for a week later in september,

pat..I bought the clamp on version (not as portable as yours) of the Regal for my first vise many years ago & I love the thing. I can really reef down on a hook & the vise holds it solid. Since I generally don't tie on hooks smaller that 16, I haven't had any problems. i never checked, but I'll have to see if the jaws are grooved. As far as size 14 & larger, absolutely no problems & I've even done saltwater up to 3/0. The best feature?....the hook feels like it's on solidly...jj

My buddy has a Regal. I've used it a few times. Great vise. Holds solid....as any quality vice should. Just not for me. Too bulky for my likings. If I had started tying on a Regal, then maybe I'd sing a different tune.
I recently got a new vice too. HMH Standard. Tying flies on it is the most fun I've had sitting down.........well....there was that one time....oh never mind ;D

Good score Pat. The Regal is what I tie on. I actually have two of them. I originally got the C-clamp model with the standard jaws about 20 years ago. It is still in great shape, looks new. Then I got the pedestal model with the midge jaws. Everything is so modular with them. I can switch jaws in seconds depending on what I want to tie.
