Certainly not original, but my first go at anything other than buggers or egg patterns. Any feedback is welcome! Wing is a black zonker, body is purple haze dubbing and the hackle is galdwell flank...all purchased this evening at the shop of course! Attachments:

hersh..Nice tie & a killer pattern. I like that color combo & sure wouldn't mind having one of those in my fly box! Are you tying those for the swap, too? What size thread are you using? For years, I used a heavier thread (more forgiving), but lately I switched to thinner. I went to a 3/0, & then finally to an 8/0 just for the heck of it. With the thinner thread, I have to be more aware of thread pressure because of breaks, but I've found that the heads are a lot neater & smaller. I don't know if the thinner thread is any more durable though, but I'll find out this year.

damn man that's a fine fly and for your first, it's fantastic. the only thing i would say is to shorten the tail a bit to prevent it from fouling on the hook when casting.

yea that looks real nice.
one of the most consistent swing flies for lake run and inland smallies.
do a few in white also.
agree the tail is a bit long and will foul when fished. try cutting the skin at a 45 degree angle about the length of the hook or a whisker shorter. keep on eye out for fouling when you start fishing then dial in tail length at tying bench for the bunny strip width and hooks (gap) you are using.
great job !

Nice looking Zonker variation!! It WILL fish very well for you, but as Nick said, shorten the tail a tad. Other than that, great proportions and tying. It will drive them nuts!!

Thanks all...trimmed the tail a bit then tied a couple in white, too. Both look great. Thread is 3/0, so on the thin side, which I have found that I prefer. Hoping to swing a few next week Thursday.
Right now, I think this is what I will tie for the swap...still playin with a couple of others though...
