tinman's post on the speys got me thinking about them again, especially the way to tie in the body hackle. i just don't like the look of the traditional ones where the body hackle is tied in by the butt. i had to sit down and tie one the other way, with the hackle tied in by the tip. this body hackle is burned schlappen the collar is redhead duck flank and the wing is two grizz/pink inside two grizz/purple neck hackles. what do you think?

Yea, "in the water" rather than at the vice , your right imo and I liked by the tip............more so front half/third than full also.
Other way is buggy as hell on the Mahoney I will say, totally splays out in water, etc. but, resembles zero that swims, lives in our waters........"zero"

Very Very Nice! Love the two tone wing the color combo is a bit reminiscent of the Magog Smelt in a good way. Better tie up a few more and bring them with you when you go Salmon Fishing.

"what do you think" ......Oh.......btw.......seeing this is in the "critique" section and amongst regional friends (chuckle) * Is that four hackle wing? It kind of looks like two * Wing is just a tad long and a bit robust width. * Hackle is a bit overly full * Is that super glue I see on the wing stem base when I zoom in on the photo? * And the head is definately a bit robust........FAT...... ..... * The first spey hackle palmer missed following the flat rib rear a little. Tough spot, likes to slip there even on easier wool rather than floss . "No big deal"........... just saying See Charlie's * The counter started well in terms of perfection 45 degree match to rib diagonally, but became a little de-railed by 2nd.3rd,4th rib crossing and definitely derailed off track by the final. Again, take a look at Charlies ........... Other than that a nice tie and definitely fishable ...........be good for Kings............amongst timber. Having fun now...........ye-hoo ! (chuckle) ;D

Nick I know what you mean by tying in tip first but I usually wind up snapping it off and just take the feather to the front and wrap back an tie it down with the counter rib. That's a good recovery tip, always seems to snap off when I have a really nice body. Also there is no lump in the body or less of a lump from tying it in tip first and gives more of a natural taper to the fly

I think the hackle could be sparser but think that it will catch fish regardless. isn't that the point?! =) Nice fly.
