hello there. so I've started spey fishing/cast this past fall and i feel like i can cast halfway decent, but it feels like i have little to no success actually catching fish. my set up is a TFO 13'6'' 8/9 weight and i have a 15 foot 3.5 ipc leader. the river is running at 1,800. do i need to get down lower or what? thanks

welcome to the site. it's hard to say what the problem is since it could be many things. for the "am i deep enough" question you should be hitting something every once in a while anyway. if you fish through a section and never bump bottom even on the hang down you are likely too light. on the other hand if you get to the point where you cannot swing through to hang down you're likely too heavy. take a look at a few of the articles in the techniques section that pertain to swinging presentation. you may find some help there. start right here www.oakorchardflies.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=flyfishingtechniquestacti&action=display&thread=2309

Welcome to the site and Spey casting/ fishing. From WNY?
Somewhere in the bottom half of the water with out being in the rocks is the cold water zone. Only you know if your there. Could be swing speed too. Your tip being a poly leader of 3"-4" appears light for the glows to me with out a weighted fly.

Alot of the steelhead are up in the smaller tribs. of the Salmon River spawning right now or up in the hatchery. ( they started egg collections on wednesday) If you go out in this 1800cfs flow my advise would be to just stay close to the bank and try to fish the inside seam and slow water near shore. Hold your fly on the downstream "dangle" for a least 10 seconds before stripping in for the next cast. Your present leader should work okay.
