This tutorial will show how to rig the Shumakov bottle tubes with vinyl jct tubing and then tie an AYN fly on it with marabou for the belly instead of the original fox tail. a simple but extremely effective fly for steelhead and just about anything else that eats bait. this color scheme of olive over yellow is a bit new for me but has accounted for two fish so far this year so it shows good promise. you can tie these in any color you can find marabou and zonker strips in. i personally like a thin strip for the average size fly but that is up to the tier.
Bottle Tube Marabou AYN
Start with 17mm of micro liner tube, 10mm of vinyl jct tube and a Shumakov Bottle Tube.
Slip the liner tube on the mandrel
Slip the Bottle tube over the liner
Melt the liner tube with a flame
Back against the bottle tube
Turn it around and melt the other end
Slip the jct tube on the mandrel and slide the lined bottle tube behind it
Push the bottle tube down onto the jct tube
Push it down until it slides up onto the bottle tube end
Completed, assembled tube and Jct.
Slide the assembled tube up the mandrel to the end and insert it into the vise
Clamp the chuck down on the jct and onto the mandrel tightly
Select a spey type marabou feather
Stroke the fibers to the top end
Pull down the short ones
Clip off the stem and the short fibers
Divide the tip fibers to remove the center section of stem
Clip off the stem
Start the thread on the tube about 1/8” from the end
Holographic gold flashabou
Four strand clipped and the tips unevened
Fold the four strands in half
Loop them under the tube and wrap the thread over two times
Pull the strands down along the sides
Flip the tube over and lay the prepared marabou over the tube
Wrap the thread over the marabou as you work it around the tube circumference
Pinch the marabou down and around the tube
The marabou should go almost all the way around the tube
Wrap several turns of thread over the marabou but do not move forward of the original thread wraps
Take a sharp blade and press it against the tube as you rotate the vise trimming off the waste of the marabou
Trimmed and ready for the wing
Thin zonker cut rabbit strip
Clip off some hair and round the corners of the strip end
Tie it in on top of the tube in the open space of the marabou
Secure the wing and marabou tightly and make a neat head.
Whip and clip the thread
Clip off the tail of the Zonker strip at the desired length
Finished Bottle tube marabou AYN
