2008 Hosted Fly Fishing Adventures
Here is the lineup of fly fishing adventures that we are hosting in 2008. I know it's summer and not many of you are thinking about saltwater fishing, but these trips fill up fast and I will need deposits in the Fall to hold the lodge space for our groups. The Fernie, BC trips for next year will also fill up quickly, especially since everyone that went this year has already indicated they are returning. If you are interested in joining us on one of these trips, or if you have any questions, please call me at 716-479-2327, or e-mail me at vtobia@aol.com.
I hope you can make it--these trips are very fun--great fishing, food and camaraderie, and some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere. Vince
Note: A trip host (myself or one of my associates) will be accompanying all anglers on these adventures, and the host will be available to help with any tackle questions or problems that arise, as well as offering any guidance or advice on fishing techniques. We will have extra gear in the event of equipment failure or breakage. Extra leaders, tippet and flies will be available too. If you need help booking your flight and making travel arrangements, we can help. Our goal is for all guests to have an enjoyable, hassle free fishing adventure.
Crooked Island, Bahamas-Bonefish Adventure (2 weeks)
February 23-March 1, 2008 TRIP IS FULL March 1-8, 2008 TRIP IS FULL
Bonefish Camp--Acklins Island, Bahamas
March 1-8, 2008 TRIP IS FULL
Seychelles Indian Ocean Adventure March 26-April 2 (trip is full)
Bonefish Camp-Eleuthera, Bahamas (2 weeks) April 19-26; April 26-May 3
There is room for 2-4 anglers to join me each week on Eleuthera for some hosted do-it-yourself saltwater angling. As your host, I will be available to help with any tackle questions or problems that arise, as well as offering guidance and advice on fishing techniques and spotting fish. We set our own fishing hours, and explore this wonderful island in the Bahamas. We'll be fishing together for four of the six days; the remaining two days you're own your own to explore further, or get a guide, and put into practice what you've learned.
We'll be wade fishing for mostly bonefish, but barracuda, jacks, snappers, boxfish, triggerfish, sharks and palometa are common. The Eleuthera DIY trip is a great deal when compared to an all-inclusive lodge. In fact, this trip includes everything that the all-inclusive lodges do, except the guides. So, for anglers with intermediate fly fishing skills and some saltwater experience, this is a great adventure at a great price.
Cost: $1450.00 for a week of fishing. This price includes your beachfront hotel for 7 nights, all your meals & non-alcoholic beverages, & vehicle (based on double occupancy). Your flight, alcohol & tips are extra. This is not a guided fly-fishing trip. The group is limited to between 2-4 anglers and intermediate fly fishing skills are required.
Campeche, Mexico-Baby Tarpon Adventure May 5-10, 2008
This trip will be hosted by well known fly fisherman & author Rick Kustich
Returning to the wonderful city of Campeche, I found myself excited to fish for “los sabalitos” once again. We were charmed by the wonderful city of Campeche, and staying at a great hotel in the town center, we were able to take in the old world feel of this historic city. This is a very nice hotel, one that your wife or significant other would love. The food, service and amenities of this hotel are first class.
The fishing was excellent, and we jumped & landed tarpon each day. This is fun fishing, where you can stalk tarpon in shallow water (2-4’) with your 8 weight rod, and floating line! Your main target is tarpon here, but there are enough snook to keep things interesting. We landed a couple snook, and each of us had 10 lb + snook roll on our flies. The best part about tarpon fishing in Campeche is stalking them, presenting your fly, and watching the fish charge it and then engulf it. The strikes are hard, and after the strike the fish go ballistic, jumping out of the water every time, more often than not three to six times—they really put on an aerial display. I can see why there are so many tarpon addicts out there. I have a great DVD that I can send you free of charge, which gives you a better feel for what to expect.
The cost is $1895.00/person for 5 nights lodging and four guided fishing days. Also includes all meals and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as pick up and drop off at the Merida international Airport.
A note about your host: Rick Kustich began fly fishing over thirty years ago on the lakes and streams of upstate New York. He has since traveled extensively to experience the finest fly fishing throughout North America. He is the author of three fly fishing books including his most recent co-authored with his brother Jerry Kustich, entitled Fly Fishing for Great Lakes Steelhead, which is a top selling fly fishing title. He has also authored numerous articles with accompanying photography in national fly fishing magazines such as Fish & Fly, Fly Fisherman, American Angler, Fly Fish America, and Fly Fishing and Tying Journal; and is a regular contributor to two regional publications: Mid Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide and Midwest Fly Fishing. Rick provides seminars and presentations throughout the year on the Great Lakes steelhead fishery and other fly fishing topics. He fly fishes nearly 100 days each year and is involved in conservation efforts aiming to improve and protect fisheries. He lives in Grand Island, NY on the banks of the Niagara River.
Costa De Cocos, Mexico-Grand Slam Quest May 10-17, 2008
Remote and way off the beaten path, Costa de Cocos lies on the border between Mexico and Belize. Overlooked and under-fished, Mexico's southern Yucatan is an angling frontier just waiting to be explored. Swaying palms, comfortable thatched roof cabanas and delicious food round out a great un-pressured angling destination.
The service and attention to detail is excellent at Costa de Cocos. The guides have an extensive knowledge of their local area and they understand well the habits of the fish that prowl these waters. These guides have excellent fish spotting ability and have become experts in the needs of itinerant anglers. The local waters have excellent populations of bonefish found on the numerous hard and soft bottom flats. It is important to note that the area’s bonefish generally run larger than the fish you will find both north and south of Costa de Cocos. For the experienced angler seeking the most elusive of flat’s inhabitants, permit are found in the bay and at the lagoon mouths. These fish sometimes school in numbers of five to twenty. The larger permit feed both in the turtle grass flats along the ocean front on an incoming tide and in Chetumal Bay, often in the morning. For baby tarpon, you can cast to mangrove edges in 6 to 10 feet of water or fish the flats and shallower lagoons for larger fish. Snook, jacks and barracuda are also targeted.
Anglers are housed in individual cabanas constructed of native stone and hardwoods. These spacious rooms have two double beds and a private bath with hot shower. Three meals per day are included in your package. Breakfast is generally light, but special requests for hardier appetites will be accommodated. Lunch is almost always on the flats, taken on the run between casts. Gourmet dinners are served family-style and include a full range of seafood, local fare, and more traditional foods.
The cost is $2950/person for 6 days guided fishing & 7 nights lodging, and includes all meals and both alcoholic & non-alcoholic beverages, and transport from Cancun airport to the lodge and back again.
British Columbia Dry Fly Adventure
August 2-9 & 9-16, 2008
TRIP IS FULL
Free dvd available-just ask and we'll send it to you
Finding great “new” spots is tougher today--here’s one to consider: while not unknown, the area around Fernie, British Columbia has earned a great (and closely guarded) reputation. The good news is that this area has some of the best dry fly fishing in North America and it has not been widely publicized. The bad news is that word is getting out and this ideal situation may begin to change in the future.
Regardless, right now this area has fantastic fishing with the main focus being some fifty miles of the Elk River. Unlike on the Missouri, Madison and many other rivers, the chances of seeing the typical “drift boat hatch” on the Elk River is small. You may only see a few other boats in a full day of fishing! There are also several other small streams that flow into the Elk and hold good populations of big fish. Most of these small streams see very little pressure and can only be reached by foot. These streams may require a bit of an effort to fish, but the rewards make it very worthwhile.
The primary target is West slope Cutthroat Trout, a species alternately snubbed as too easy to catch or adored for its slow motion, dry fly take. And while both are true, it is also true that the larger they grow, the smarter they become... and the Elk River has some cutts’ with thick shoulders and deep bodies!
