Just wondering if you have any tips for working with the snowshoe rabbit hair. do you use heavier threads to cinch it down tight or keep it on the sparse side? A guy handed me a Usual on the stream a few years ago and I fell in love with it! I can't say I've caught many fish using it but the hair is intriguing to me for some reason. I am wondering what you think about its use as wings in something like a Wulff style. Do you find it difficult to use on smaller hook sizes? Is there a breakdown method for separating the better fibers? I'm sure your opinions would be helpful. Thanks.

I am not from the ADKs, but I do tie some patterns with snowshoe rabbit. To me, snowshoe is a bit like fishing CDC: once it gets soaked, it is hard to resurrect to its original state but it always looks better than any other fly you put against it. I have been told that Loon Lochsa works, but I have not been made a believer. The best part of the fur is between the toes. A trick to exposing these prime fibers is to carefully split each toe with a razor blade. I have tied snowshoe on flies down to 18-20 with 8/0 thread and had no problems. Another tip is to cut a bit more off than what may look right. Even if you do a prepick out of the loose fibers, some tend to pull out and a bigger clump of material also makes for a better flare. Hope this helps!
