I've heard on some other sites that taping the joints or ferrules when joining the rod is necessary with spey rods because of the extreme torque and twisting action placed on the rod when spey casting. Is this true??
I always rub a paraffin bar on the male ferrules each time I join my 13.5 foot Orvis 3-piece rod together and have never had the rod loosen up in a full day of fishing.
Should I be taping the joints also? Thanks for any advice.

it is personal preference on one hand and cheap insurance on the other. i pretty much always tape them just so i don't have to think about it the rest of the day. just a wrap or two of electrical tape is all you need. either way just keep an eye on the guide alignment and check them ocasionaly. loose ferrules are way up on the list of how spey rods get broken.

Catch 22. cosmetics vs. broken rod. My brother-in-law taped his ferrules and the tape caused some of the epoxy finish on his new rod to come off. I have also experience the same thing on an older rod. So this past weekend instead of taping his ferrules together he applied some extra force to push the ferrules together so they wouldn't come apart while fishing. Apparently he used too much force and he jammed the ferrules together so strong that his rod broke while trying to seperate the pieces. New rod on order.
This same brother-in-law broke a rod a year earlier when untaped ferrules seperated while casting.
For me...I tape. No broken rods....yet.
