Our friends across the pond have set a new world record Spey cast this past weekend. Gerard Downey of Ireland cast 74 yards during qualifying at the Loughs Agency Angling Fair in Ireland. The top 4 finishers were all within 6 feet of one another (getting right at the top) with Ruairi Costello of Ireland getting 196.7 feet for the win. Rods/lines for the top 6 finishers were all Carron 18' and 105' competition lines. Details and commentary are at the following link. salmo.proboards74.com/index.cgi?board=events&action=display&thread=1202556169&page=1Sorry for the click through, guys. -Chris

222' that's just unbelieveable! so in qualifing he set the record but in the competition i was under 200 for the top spot? it's funny how that seems to happen. i guess even at that level they still only nail one out of 20 or something. of course i nail one and it goes 120 they nail one and it goes 222!

I think the weather came into play during the final. There were a few launched upwards of 69-70 yards during qualifying, but 74 is just nuts. If the weather is fair during the other few big rod competitions this year my bet is the record falls a couple more times. The technique at that level is really something not to mention that just lifting a 105 foot head off the water takes some power.
It'd be a blast to get the Carron folks over again. Maybe we need a 13' foot rod competition so us mere mortals can compete ;-)
