What's a good synthetic substitute for bucktail? I'm tying large flies & like the light weight & H2O repellent qualities of the synthetics. Looking for as close to the same texture, thickness & stiffness of bucktail...Thanks

If you don't get many responses it may be because no one has ever found a Good synthetic bucktail sub…….at least I haven't.
May be easier to list the one's that are not good rather than are,
FWIW- I always found buck tail easy to cast, better waster shedding etc, compared to other Natural hairs anyways.

Doesn't have the stiffness of BT, but craft fur works quite well, sheds water well...we use it for larger streamers, Eat a Peach, Bad Hair Day etc.

I don't know of anything that is very comparable. IMO... bucktail is very light weight and sheds water very well, not sure i'd be looking for a substitute if those are the reasons.

Nate...After watching your demo, I'm sticking with the bucktail. I liked the way the expandable sleeving allowed the bucktail to stay flared without adding too much bulk (big profile w/o too much material). I got some of the sleeving in & it's just the ticket. I was trying to get some size out of the buck without adding too much bulk. Reverse tying didn't seem to do it. It used more fur than I had wanted & I originally hoped a synthetic would have been the answer. The technique you showed was much better. Thanks.
