www.dyeyouryarn.com/kool-aid.htmlThis may not be the most effective method but it is cheap, available, and it works. I have now dyed arctic fox, saddle hackle, and marabou. Plus what steelhead or musky can say no to a mix of ice blue raspberry lemonade and black cherry. This article says no vinegar is needed but I do it anyway to be sure the dye sets. Microwave 8oz of water. stir in mix add a bit of vinegar drop in fur or feather and stir for 30 seconds take out and drop into ice water for 30 more seconds Wash and rinse with a drop of dish soap Dry and tie.

Great idea. Rit dyes work well too. They are readily available at Wegman's or Tops.

Had great success with the koolaid on the stove method with deer body hair and tails, marabou, arctic-silver-marble fox tails and a few other things. Could not get the deer or fox to dye worth a crap with the rit. It worked but everything came out as a light pastel color no matter how long I let it sit or how much dye I used. I like the fact that the koolaid can easily b darkened by adding another 20cent packet. When using the rit do u follow the instructions on the pack? I even washed the hair first, soaked it in warm water, and a few other things with not a ton of luck. Also the koolaid stuff smells way better. Hope steelhead like grape, orange, watermelon, and blue raspberry cause those are my fave tying colors!!!!

I like it because it's so cheap and available. For my musky flies I die four to six hackles at a time. That would incredibly wasteful with the Rit.

i mix 1 package koolaid w/8 oz. h2o and dissolve it in a glass bowl .then i microwave it for 2 mins and let it cool for 10 mins. after about 3 or 4 cycles the water comes clear and the dye is in the material . then rinse it in warmish water and set out to dry . if you use cold water wool and alpaca wool (and dog under fur ) will felt . i use food coloring to increase vibrancy . if i do this i add some vinegar to the brew . i have used this on fur , feathers and bucktail with great results . very cheap . oddball colors can be found on ebay if you can't get what you want locally .
