You need a vice, bobbin, scissors, hackle pliers, etc. If you plan on tying tube flies for steelhead you will need a tube fly adapter. Most importantly, be sure to see Nick at the fly shop. Local fly shop owners have forgotten more than box store employees will ever know. Enjoy tying. There is nothing more rewarding in this sport than to catch fish on your own creation. It saves money as well. Good luck.

I'm not sure I've been able to save money, but I get a real kick when I catch a fish with a fly I've tied. Also a really humbling experience to see how good some of the tiers are. It's really awesome to see a tier like Nick who ties production flies efficiently and well, and Charlie who ties some of the most stunning flies you'll see, and the guys who tie the huge musky flies. OOFS does a great series of fly tying demos in the winter.
