This fish came out of a very slow tailout while pulling in the fly line to keep the fly moving at a good speed. Fast water, slow water. The more you know about fishing different water, the bigger your river is. Same fly as i have hooked fish out of real fast water with, the Turducken. Fast water means more hang down of the fly with the line more parallel to the current to slow down the fly. Slow water usually means more line perpendicular to the current to speed up the fly along with a hand crawl retrieve or very slow line pull as it slows to the hang down. In general keep the fly moving at the speed the fish want regardless of the current speed by mending your line. Keep your head in the game!

Thats a beauty. Great reminders of the basics of the swing, as there is a lot of slower water these days. No complaints tho, at least we're able to be on the water this season! This is a gift.

The more you know about fishing different water, the bigger your river is. Sage advice Nick. Our big trib has seen a a lot more pressure this fall and I've had to grid a lot of secondary water to stay in the game some days. The prime buckets are getting pounded and even though we have an established rotation system and folks are generally well behaved, taking a place in the rotation is not my cup of tea. some examples: What surprises me is that how many big fish can be found in really skinny (2-3 foot deep) and slow water. I've always thought that big bucks avoid it, but we've seen a lot of 30-34" fish in surprisingly shallow water. Some really big fish showing up this fall on our side. You guys seeing that too? Larry

nick, it's like you're describing my Monday post-dental appointment day off of fishing. were you watching from the bushes or possibly cleverly disguised as one of 6 pinners that low holed me? this hen came out of a slow deep pool where no mending was required. just a good cast to set it up this little buck came out of the midpoint of pool at the end of fast chute with some depth. this piece of water required some concentration and line control to get a good swing. both fish hit the fly mid-swing with some force. to make the day even better, no one else in this area touched a fish. not even the walri looking for their buckets
