This question is for Nick. What dubbing do you use for the thorax of your bwo biot with the poly wing?

for the dun version it is superfine brown olive or sometimes grey olive. for the emerger version i use antron dubbing in a mix of a little black with olive as the wingcase gets darker as the insect emerges. the added sparkle of the antron is supposed to replicate the gasses involved in the emergence.

Thanks for the info Nick. One more question. What is the best way to mix dubbing? I saw some bwo's the other day and they didn't match olive dubbing or bwo dubbing, they looked more like a tan olive.

they do vary widely in color and there are more than one species of baetis here too.
to mix superfine just take a pinch of dubbing and lay it on top of another pinch and pull it apart, restack and pull it apart again until sufficiently blended. with superfine or antron the trick is to do it gently and slowly or it will tangle the fibers and then tear them resulting in balled or matted spots. i find blending dubbing to be absolutly necessary for some flies like the hendrickson for example. you will have to eyeball the amounts to mix to get the right color. start very small, write down the ratio of parts added and when it's right make more.

Thanks Nick. I'll give it a try.
