So I have this old camera that has done me good since the 70's, before digitals were invented (I think). It's a Canon AE-1 Program, SLR, not a model I would consider high end, but it did what I needed back then and for the next 25 years. For me, it was a good value. I was always happy with it. I have two lenses for it; a 35-70mm Canon zoom & a Vivitar 70-210mm macro focusing zoom. The lenses are the screw-on type. Now I'm looking to upgrade so I can take some closeups of flies & still, hopefully, keep my telephoto for use of longer shots. Any thoughts, ideas, advice etc? I'm willing to spend $500-$700 but not too much higher than that. One of the things I ask myself is: should I keep the lenses & get a body only or should I dump the whole thing & start new? What other thoughts? Thanks..JJ

Sadly, I'm pretty sure those lenses won't be compatible with current Canon cameras. There is an adaptor which can make the FD mount on those work with the current EF lens mount, but only optically. It will not allow for any communication in regards to setting exposure or autofocus. To get those creamy backgrounds you're used to on your AE-1, you'd ideally be looking for a "full frame" camera, but they are quite a bit more expensive. You might consider a used Canon 5D to get in that price range and still be able to afford a decent hunk of glass. Or if you want new (I would), here is a legit review site that did a "roundup" of recent entry level dSLR's. You pretty much can't go wrong with Canon or Nikon. www.dpreview.com/articles/0450645720/consumer-dslr-camera-roundup-2014 You will save a ton by not having to process film, so maybe you will be able to stretch out that initial outlay a bit more. There is also the mirrorless segment that fits between the SLR's and the pocket cams, but I don't know anything about them.

Jethro...thanks for the info & link. You certainly gave me plenty to think about and another avenue to go. Never thought about the "talking" to each other but now that I know what I'm in for, I can start figuring out what I'm going to do.
