Yep. Fish waste, uneaten fish food, cleaning and disinfecting agents, antibiotics, suspended solids (total and volatile), ammonia, organic nitrogen, total phosphorus.... Wasn't there also a derailment of a load of salt around Wheatland Center right about the time frame we're talking here?

Yes, there was a derailment of salt. I would imagine that the salt would have killed off the bugs though too?

I guess we will never know for sure. The DEC contacted me and they claim there are still some fish in the Veteran's Section, although not as many as usual. For those of us that are taking this seriously we know this is absolute bullshit. There might be a trout hiding in the weeds somewhere so they can say that trout still exist. They told me that they will do a trout count on both streams at the end of the season. Salt, fish shit, mergansers, whatever...the trout are gone! We have zero support from the DEC. They believe in the merganser angle, but yet they don't want to put a moratorium on both streams in regard to fishing. I don't understand their shortsightedness. In other states when wild trout are threatened the rivers are shut down. This has happened several times in Montana and Idaho during drought conditions. We have (had) three wild brown trout streams worth mentioning in WNY and two are dead. These kinds of decisions make it hard for me not to see the DEC as I do other government agencies in the state (use your imagination).

The birds were there and now the Trout are not. Must be the birds.
The Post-Hoc fallacy. "After This Before Because Of This". Its a common human trait to assume causation based upon two co-occurring events. That is, the human assumption that when one event follows another the first event MUST be the cause. We've all pressed buttons and been rewarded with a candy bar / drink our entire lives. We're well trained. We think in a linear fashion to try and make sense of the world. But the worlds not linear. It's a fallacy.
The birds were there and now the Trout are not. Must be the birds.
Please dig deeper DEC. Please have 3rd party check the water.
Also sounds like a perfect opportunity for TU to get involved. Were talking about habitat right? TU chapters across the county take on issues like this all the time. Perhaps it could be placed on a TU meeting agenda?

Who's paying for that? TU? I do believe the DEC is capable of testing properly, BUT can we trust the answer and what happens next...

Unless there are fines to be handed out and money to be made, I am sure they will continue to sit on their hands.
