i would like to have the DEC take this tragedy and turn it around by stocking heritage strain NY brook trout in spring creek. provided there isn't something systematic wrong. it would likely only take one stocking and maybe closing the creek for a year or two. how cool would it be to restore the creek with it's native fish? Nick- Amazing thought on taking advantage of a terrible situation. Doing it in a way that would ensure better, self-sustaining heritage brook trout populations would be even greater. There is something called a "Whitlock Vibert Box" that I think could be the future of stream restoration. Instead of raising fish on pellets in cement tanks to be stupid adult fish this system "stocks" streams with fertilized eggs and protects eggs and fry... the re-population takes more time, but growth and intelligence of the fish happen naturally. The fish are arguably wild. If DEC did that with Heritage Brook Trout Eggs... oh man... Video & More information from Dave Whitlock: www.fedflyfishers.org/Conservation/Programs/EggPlant/tabid/120/Default.aspxif anyone has more information on this process or first hand experience with it- it would be great to hear about it. Patience is key...

I favor the brook trout idea as well. The DEC needs to determine the cause of death and take the necessary steps to protect the two streams before that idea can be put into motion. I really feel hoodwinked by the DEC during this whole ordeal.
