This fly is a derivation of a fly called the Mahoney invented by west coast steelhead guide Dec Hogan. Black and red have been very productive colors on our local tributaries so when I saw Hogan’s original fly I thought it would be a winner. However, I thought it was a bit too bright for my liking. To solve the problem I just reversed the colors. Red became black and black became red. This color change seemed to darken the fly to the degree I wanted. Hook: Up eye salmon hook. Rib: Flat pearl myler and oval silver tinsel. Body: Rear 1/3: black floss; front 2/3: black seal dubbing. Body hackle: Red schlappen, one side stripped. Throat: Black schlappen and red guinea. Wing: Four Black hackle tips. Head: Black.
