Just tying a bunch of different midge patterns to prepare for the near future. A few questions...when tying the emerger patterns how long should the trailing shuck be in proportion to the hook/fly???how long should the wings be? Can you tie them with wing only/shuck only??? Lastly...the nymph patterns have a small "wing" i.e motor midge, what is that suppose to represent and can you just dub the head and forgo the "wing" Look forward to the responses and learning something JP

the shuck represents the empty nymph husk so it should be about the length of the body. the shuck isn't necessary but when the midges are actually hatching i feel it works better. late in the day when the midges are laying eggs there is no hatch so no shuck is needed (spinners vs emergers). the little deer hair wing on the motor midge represents the wings of the midge as it pupates and rises to the surface. it's likely not totally necessary either but that pattern has proven itself so many times as is i couldn't have as much confidence in it without it. that being said there are a ton of patterns out there without it so...

Do you have a tutorial for this fly?

Nevermind, I found it. It reminds me of a Brassie with a Deer hair wing. Is that pretty much it, just different colors?

you got it. the smaller they get the more simple they get!

you can substitute the deerhair for other things like poly yarn. You dont need to tie them with a shuck or a wing necessarily either. I tend to just use a simple dark brown olive thread body midge with a xsmall/small rib and then a piece of pearl mylar for a wingcase/thorax. just make the thorax slightly thicker.

Thanks Nick!!! I recently watched a video on midges and see a def similarity in regards to the wings on your motor midge to the actual midge larvae as it ascends to the surface and pupates...when they return to the water to lay eggs are those generally the black bugs/longish legs I see skittering around on the surface in the local streams?

that's them. basically a mosquito without the poker. they will hatch sporadically all day and then if it stays warm enough they will mate and lay eggs in the late afternoon.
btw i have tried all sorts of stuff for the wing stub but the deer hair just seems to look the closest to the natural and has always performed better for me anyway.
