brookies..thanks much for posting the closeups. The after-pics really add a lot to the swap. Do you have a pic of your light box? Does anyone remember a thread on building light boxes for closeups? I think the added feature of taking your own pics helps to tie a better fly (proportions, material, colors, etc.) & I'd like to try some of my own pics. The Mirrored Minnow is a Jim Guida (a local tier) design with my own variations. I've had unusual luck with this fly in high & muddy water. I usually don't like to fish that kind, but, damm, I & others with whom I've fished, have always connected in muddy water using it.
The recipe that I use: Hook: TMC 7999 Zonker: Mini olive rabbit zonker strips (use standard size for a fuller look) Dubbing: Flashabou Silver Dubbing & I mix in about 10% Flashabou Sky Blu dubbing. Use a dubbing loop to make a full body Throat: White Arctic Fox Tail medallion Thread: Red
...and Charlie..thanks for "capturing the moment" on digital

oakorchardflies.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=membersflies&action=display&thread=1802JJ, The above is the thread with a picture of my light box. Very simple just a cardboard box with large holes cut out on each side and the front face. Draped Muslin fabric over the top to shoot through, a blue background sheet of poster paper. And finally two trouble lights from Home Depot with real light UV bulbs in them. You can also find fairly inexpensive collapsible light tents on the internet.

brookies...thanks for the link. It looks like an EZ light box setup & will also allow for tinkering around. I think taking pics of my ties will bring out the areas where I could tie better, not that I think most fish care. I've never thought too much of all the little details in tying. What I've found is that, even though some flies I tie look like $hit, they'll still catch fish, and besides that & most importantly, I enjoy tying. But it's a lot like playing sports. You get better when you start playing teams who are better. It helps one to step up a notch. And when you start swapping flies with other tiers, it makes me want to step up a notch just to better myself. thanks again & see you guys at the next...jj
